Lattice ellipsoidal statistical BGK model for thermal non- equilibrium flows

چکیده
A thermal lattice Boltzmann model is constructed on the basis of the ellipsoidal statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (ES-BGK) collision operator via the Hermite moment representation. The resulting lattice ES-BGK model uses a single distribution function and features an adjustable Prandtl number. Numerical simulations show that using a moderate discrete velocity set, this model can accurately recover steady and transient solutions of the ES-BGK equation in the slip-flow and early transition regimes in the small Mach number limit that is typical of microscale problems of practical interest. In the transition regime in particular, comparisons with numerical solutions of the ES-BGK model, direct Monte Carlo and lowvariance deviational Monte Carlo simulations show good accuracy for values of the Knudsen number up to approximately 0.5. On the other hand, highly non-equilibrium phenomena characterized by high Mach numbers, such as viscous heating and force-driven Poiseuille flow for large values of the driving force, are more difficult to capture quantitatively in the transition regime using discretizations chosen with computational efficiency in mind such as the one used here, although improved accuracy is observed as the number of discrete velocities is increased.

Thermal lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model for flows with viscous heat dissipation in the incompressible limit.
In this paper, by introducing a different distribution function and starting from the Boltzmann equation as well as the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, we obtain a Boltzmann Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation for thermal flows with viscous heat dissipation in the incompressible limit. The continuous thermal BGK model is then discretized over both time and phase space to form a lattice BGK mod...
متن کاملInverse Chapman - Enskog Derivation of the Thermohydrodynamic Lattice - BGK Model for the Ideal Gas ∗
A thermohydrodynamic lattice-BGK model for the ideal gas was derived by Alexander et al. in 1993, and generalized by McNamara et al. in the same year. In these works, particular forms for the equilibrium distribution function and the transport coefficients were posited and shown to work, thereby establishing the sufficiency of the model. In this paper, we rederive the model from a minimal set o...
متن کاملOn the ellipsoidal statistical model for polyatomic gases
Abstract The aim of this article is to construct a BGK-type model for polyatomic gases which gives in the hydrodynamic limit the proper transport coefficient. Its construction relies upon a systematic procedure: minimizing Boltzmann entropy under suitable moments constraints ([20, 9]). The obtained model corresponds to the ellipsoidal statistical model introduced in [2]. We also study the retur...
متن کاملCompound waves in a thermohydrodynamic lattice BGK scheme using non-perturbative equilibria
– A previously proposed thermohydrodynamic lattice BGK scheme using nonperturbative, or non-polynomial, equilibria is found to simulate continuum equations that differ from the Euler equations of gas dynamics at leading order. Shock tube simulations with this BGK scheme coincide with solutions obtained by solving these different continuum equations with conventional methods. Both sets of soluti...
متن کاملBuoyancy Term Evolution in the Multi Relaxation Time Model of Lattice Boltzmann Method with Variable Thermal Conductivity Using a Modified Set of Boundary Conditions
During the last few years, a number of numerical boundary condition schemes have been used to study various aspects of the no-slip wall condition using the lattice Boltzmann method. In this paper, a modified boundary condition method is employed to simulate the no-slip wall condition in the presence of the body force term near the wall. These conditions are based on the idea of the bounce-back ...
